Sufi Nawab Gada Ali Khan Laghari
He had great interest in Sufism and was inspired by the dervish way of life at a very young age. He was the son of Ali Mohammed Khan Sa’ani and the grandson of Nawab Ghulam Mohammed Khan Tajpuri. Gada Ali Khan was a magnificent poet but lived a short life sadly ; in the year 1925 AD/1344 AH, he passed away at the age of 29. Two of his poems are recorded in Kafiyuun.

Sher Mohammed Khan son of Nawab Qadir Buksh Khan Laghari - Tajpur

Yet another son of the Laghari dynasty of Tajpur was Sher Mohammed Khan, his father’s name was Nawab Qadir Buksh Khan. He passed away in 1915 AD/ 1335 AH. He said poems, one of which is presented in the book titled Kafiyuun by Dr.Baloch.

Murad Faqir Jalalani was the disciple of Jhok Sharif lineage. Three of his poems are recorded in Kafiyuun. Not much is mentioned about him.

Sufi Qadir Buksh ‘Bedil’

Sufi Qadir Buksh ‘Bedil’
One of the legendary poets and Sufi masters of the Indus Valley was Abdul Qadir alias Qadir Buksh ‘Bedil’ of the historical Rohri. His father was a dervish himself and he was known as Dervish Mohammed Hassan. Bedil was born in 1230 AH/ 1814 AD. He was educated in theology and Arabic and Persian languages. He was greatly inspired by Qalander Lal Shahbaz of Sehwan and was his aficionado. Sufi Qadir Buksh Bedil was a contemporary poet and a friend of Sachal Sarmast of Darazaan. 
He is the author of many a books on Islamic social science, Sufi disciplines, one of his great works in Persian is titled Panj Gunj (The Five Treasures), & another is Divan-e-Bedil.
Bedil was a great poet of Sindhi, Siraiki, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and Marwardi-dialect languages. He departed in the year 1873 AD/1249 AH and his mausoleum is in Rohri. Account of his life and most of his works have been published.

Himat Ali Shah Rizvi, of Rohri ‘Kotaee Saadaat’

Himat Ali Shah Rizvi, a sufi master & poet was a resident of Rohri. He belonged to the family of Syeds locally known as ‘Kotaee Saadaat’, he lived in the neighborhood of Syed Yaquub Ali Shah. The dates of his birth & demise are not known. However, his handwritten manuscript bears his signature that dates 20th Rabi-ul-Awal 1290 AH/1873 AD. Three of his poems are presented in the Kafiyuun.
Some works of two other poets are recorded in the manuscript by Himat Ali Shah; their names are Behraam and Safiullah, their poems are presented the Dr.N.B.K.Baloch’s collection Kafiyuun.

Shah Mohammed Deeder

Shah Mohammed Deeder
Shah Mohammed Deeder, was yet another Sufi master and a poet – he was born in 1830 AD / 1249 AH in a village called Deeder, Larkano, Sindh.
He was the grandson of Sufi poet Hussein Faqir Deeder. Shah Mohammed was a  contemporary poet to Hamal Faqir Laghari and had gatherings with him.
He said poems in Sindhi & Siraiki languages, some of his works were published in various collections of Kafi by the publishers of Sukkur & Shikarpur, such as ‘Pokerdaas’.
Dr.Nabi Buksh Khan Baloch has presented five of Shah Mohammed Deeder’s poems, in his compilation titled: Kafiyuun. Shah Mohammed Deeder passed away on 16th of Ramadan 1309 AH/ 1892 AD.

Hussein Faqir Deeder of Kanber/Qanber , Larkano

Hussein Faqir Deeder of Kanber
Born around 1800 AD, Hussein Faqir Deeder was a Sufi poet and master, who lived in Kanber, Larkano. He served as an officer in the regime of the Talpurs. 
In the later part of his life, Hussein Faqir spent imparting knowledge through his teachings and lived a Sufi life.Hamal Faqir Leghari was his contemporary poet. Hussein Faqir said poems in Sindhi and Siraiki languages.
 He passed away in 1873 AD/ 1290 AH. The Sindhi Adabi Board published his works in 1971 compiled by Abdul Karim Sundelo. Dr.N.B.K. Baloch has presented three of his poem in the Kafiyuun.

Hamal Faqir Laghari

A  Sufi mystic & poet, Hamal Khan was the son of Raheem Khan Laghari. He was born in 1809 AD/ 1225 AH. His ancestors lived in the Khairpur state. As he grew up he moved to the village Mir Khan Laghari, Sakrand, Nawabshah, Sindh.
He was well educated and chose teaching, for his career. He was the disciple of Masters of Lavaree Sharif. He was a great poet of Sindhi & Siraiki languages  and composed poetry in various genres.  Hamal Faqir passed away on the 2nd of Safar 1291 AH/ 1878 AD. His works have been published as Kuliyat-e-Hamal.

Molvi Mohammed Ibrahim of Madaee ( Kuch)

Molvi Mohammed Ibrahim of Madaee ( Kuch) was a contemporary of Molvi Mohammed Ismail Rungraiz who got his Moluud( Hymns) published in his own compilation “ Rodha al Hasnaat” ( Printed in 1332 AH). One of his poems is preserved in the Kafiyuun.

Miyuun Malook- Kuch

Miyuun Malook
Yet another poet from the Kuch region was Miyuun Malook. He used to live in Khorr, Lakhpat region of Kuch. He passed away in the last quarter of the 14th Hijra century i.e. 1960s to 1980s. One of his poems is preserved in the Kafiyuun by Dr.Baloch ,published by Sindhi Adabi Board, 1985.

Haji Makhun Jat

Haji Makhun was a resident of Nukh Khemani, Paro Mithani of the Bani region of Kuch. He was well known in is region for his poetry. The time of his demise is approximated to be by 1930s AD. One of his poems is preserved in the Kafiyuun.

Syed Miyan Saheb Shah of Aakhani, Kuch

Syed Miyan Saheb Shah
He was a resident of Aakhani, Kuch and was a disciple of Pir Baqer Shah of Naadapi, Kuch. He spent sixteen years in the service of his spiritual master. He said poems and was a skilled singer. He passed away in 1351AH/ 1940s AD. Two of his poems are included in the collection titled Kafiyuun.

Yet another contemporary poet and an associate to Pir Ghous Mohammed was Pir Baqer Shah. He lived in the Naadapi, Kuch. He departed in 1313 AH/ 1895 AD (approximately). One of his poems is preserved in the Kafiyuun.

Pir Manthar Shah was a contemporary poet and an associate to Pir Ghous Mohammed.
Pir Manthaar lived in Lakhpat,Kuch where his ancestral mausoleums are located.

Pir Ghous Mohammed
A thirteenth Hijra century poet- Pir Ghous Mohammed lived in Lakhpat, Kuch, Sindh. He passed away in 1873/ 1290 AH. 
Dr.N.B.K.Baloch has presented one of his poems in  the Kafiyuun. Unfortunately not much is known about him.

Syed Nawab Shah

Syed Nawab Shah – a Sufi poet was the son of Syed Imam Ali Shah and was born in Rohri in 1843 AD.
He was the disciple of Faqir Mohammed Hassan ‘Bequs’. He said poems in Sindhi & Siraiki languages. He passed away in the month of Dhul Qa’ad 1319 AH/ 1901 AD. Two of his poems are preserved in collection Kafiyuun by Dr.Baloch.

Faqir Paro Shah of Rohri, Sindh

One of the disciples of Sufi Qadir Buksh ‘Bedil’ was Paro. He was resident of Rohri and initially of Hindu belief and later became the disciple of Sufi Qadir Buksh ‘Bedil’.
He became a Sufi Faqir, and was titled ‘Paro Shah’ out of respect. One of his poems is presented in the Kafiyuun by Dr.N.B.K.Baloch, published and printed by Sindhi Adabi Board, Jamshoro/ Haiderabad , Sindh ,1985.

Faqir Mohammed Hassan ‘Bequs’

Faqir Mohammed Hassan ‘Bequs’ a young Sufi poet and master was the son of Sufi Qadir Buksh ‘Bedil’. He was born in Rohri, on 2nd February 1859 AD/ 22nd Jamad ul Sani 1275 AH. He was brought up and educated by his reverent father. He developed great veneration for Qalander Lal Shahbaz of Sehwan and Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed of Jhok Sharif.

Bequs passed away, sadly,  at a very young age of 22 years on 5th of Ramadan 1298 AH/ 1881. He said poems in Sindhi, Hindi, Siraiki and Persian languages. His collection of poems Divan-e-Bequs has been published and contains 194 poems in the genre of Kafi in Sindhi & Siraiki languages.

Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed ‘Ameen’

Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed ‘Ameen’
A great Sufi master & poet of Sindh ;Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed ‘Ameen’ titled ‘Pakhan Dhani’ son of Makhdoom Mohammed Zaman was born  on the 7th of Shuabaan 1254 AH/ 26th October 1838 AD. He was from the esteemed family of the great master Hazrat Makhdoom Nuuh, mausoleum in Hala, Sindh.

He got his basic education from Akhund Mohammed Qasim and chose the Sufi way of life at the age of fifteen. Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed said poems in Sindhi, Siraiki & Hindi languages which echoed through out the Sindh. 

The collection of his works has been published, titled as ‘Kuliyat-e-Ameen’. Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed ‘Ameen’ departed on the 27th of Ramadan 1303 AH/ 29th June 1886 AD.
Dr.Baloch has presented seven of his poems in his compilation the Kafiyuun (Published by Sindhi Adabi Board, 1985).

Makhdoom Ghulam Nabi alias Miyan Piniladho

Makhdoom Ghulam Nabi alias Miyan Piniladho son of Makhdoom Mohammed Zaman and younger brother of Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed ‘Ameen’- was another great poet of the thought. 
He was born in 1268AH/ 1852 AD. He said poems in Sindhi, Siraiki, Urdu, Arabic & Persian languages. His poems have been preserved  in the collection ‘Kuliyat-e-Ameen’. Dr.Baloch is said to have a manuscript that has a larger number of his poems. Four poems of Makhdoom  Ghulam Nabi alias Miyan Piniladho have been presented in the Kafiyuun collection.

Makhdoom Ghulam Hussein ‘Shayda’
He was the son of Makhdoom  Ghulam Nabi alias Miyan Piniladho and was a great poet like his father. He was born in 1884 AD.He grew up as a great orator; he had good command over the Persian & Urdu language skills. Dr.Baloch has presented four of his poems in his compilation the Kafiyuun (Published by Sindhi Adabi Board, 1985)

Makhdoom Ahmed Ali

Born in 1301 AH/!884 AD - The grand son of Makhdoom Ghulam Nabi alias Miyan Piniladho, and the son of Makhdoom Ghulam Rasool; Makhdoom Ahmed Ali was yet another great poet in the lineage of the Great Spiritual Master Makhdoom Nuuh (Rehmatullah Aleh). Dr.N B K Baloch has presented one of his poems in his compilation ; Kafiyuun.
Makhdoom Ahmed Ali passed away on the 7th of Shuabaan 1357 AH/1938 AD and according to his will he was buried at Karbala.

Makhdoom Ghulam Muhammed Saeen ‘Maghmoom’ ‘Sarwer Ali’ .- son of Makhdoom Zaheeruddin alias ‘Paroo Jam’ - the 15th care-taker( Sajadah Nashin) of the shrine of Hazrat Makhdoom Nuuh (Rehmatullah Aleh)

A great Sufi master in the Makhdoom Nuuh legacy was Makhdoom Ghulam Muhammed Saeen. He was the son of Makhdoom Zaheeruddin alias ‘Paroo Jam’ - the 15th care-taker( Sajadah Nashin) of the shrine of Hazrat Makhdoom Nuuh (Rehmatullah Aleh).
A man of high ethics , a dervish; Makhdoom Ghulam Muhammed was a close associate and contemporary of the great Sufi master, spiritual leader & poet Syed Ghulam Mahdi Shah Jahania alias Faqir  Mahdi Saeen of Shahpur Jahania, and of Sufi master & poet Muhammed Faqir Khatiyaan Saeen.
Makhdoom Ghulam Muhammed Saeen inherited the Faqir-way and poetic skills. He spent a greater time of his life living the dervish & the Sufi ways. He used ‘Sarwer Ali’ as his nom du plume. One of his poems is presented in the collection Kafiyuun by Dr.Baloch. Makhdoom Ghulam Muhammed ‘Maghmoom’ ‘Sarwer Ali’ Saeen departed in 1944 AD.

Manthaar Faqir Rajar of Khipro , Sindh

A great sufi master & poet of Sindh was Manthaar Faqir Rajar. He was son of Qabool Mohammed Rajar and was born in 1865 AD in “Rajaran Ji Khaani’ Khipro,Sindh. He adopted the Faqir-way and sought the spiritual guidance of Makhdoom Ameen Mohammed of Hala & became his student. Manthaar Faqir Rajar composed poems in various genres in Sindhi literature such as Bait, Moluud, Teeh Akhri, Madaah,Manajaat and Kafi-being the major genre. His works are spread over three volumes ie. Risalo Khudai, Risalo Murtaza Panjtani & Risalo Rehnumai. Manthaar Faqir Rajar’s Risalo Khudai was published by Manthaar Faqir himself in 1929 AD with the co-operation Mr.Jamiat Rai, son of Rai Saheb Deevan Naraain Das and Mr.Partab Rai son of Mr.Shamdas of Bayrani and with the efforts of Chibharr Bheel Allahdino Faqir. 
Manthaar Faqir passed away in 1938 AD/1357 AH.

Allahdino Faqir Maachi son of Jiyando Maachi - resident of village Jafar Khan Laghari, Sanjhoro, district Sanghar.

Born in 1880 AD, Faqir Allah Dino son of Jiyando Maachi was a resident of village Jafar Khan Laghari, Sanjhoro, district Sanghar. Since his childhood, the young Allah Dino displayed great interest for singing. Later on he became the student of one of the spiritual leaders of the time; Pir Saheb Hassan Buksh Shah of Dithirri and got to improve his skills in singing, and playing the traditional instruments. After the demise of Pir Saheb, Allahdino became the spiritual follower of Manthaar Faqir Rajar, he then began to compose poems himself.  
Later on he gained popularity in the region and was invited to various locations for his poetry and singing. That got him to travel numerous locations in Sindh. 
He was a cheerful person, said more than a thousand poems in the genre of Kafi, and used to improvise poems in the genre of Bait. Faqir Allah Dino Maachi departed in 1381 AH/ 1961 AD. Eleven of his poems are presented in the Kafiyuun by Dr.Baloch.

Faqir Nawab Wali Mohammed Khan Laghari

One of the legendary poets and Sufi masters of the Indus Valley was reverent Faqir Nawab Wali Mohammed Khan Laghari. 
He was the son of Nawab Ahmed Khan, and the grandson of Nawab Wali Mohammed Khan- the Prime Minister of the Talpur regime then. He was born in Tando Wali Mohammed, Hyderabad, Sindh in 1836 AD/ 1252 AH.

After the British invasion in the region, he moved to Mirzanpur, Sakrand, in the North of Haiderabad. Amongst his teachers were Akhund Sawani, Miyan Ghulam Mohammed, Miyan Mohammed Sadiq, Miyan Muqeem and Miyan Sajawal.

For spiritual path he became the student of Sufi Ibrahim Shah ‘Bangalay Dhani’ of Jhok Sharif lineage. In the year 1883 AD/ 1301 AH due to the heavy flood affecting Mirzanpur badly, Faqir Nawab Wali Mohammed Khan migrated to Tajpur for good.
At the age of forty, he renounced the worldly affairs, and handed the matters over to his brother Nawab Buksh Ali Khan and chose Sufi way of life.

He was fond of spiritual music and poetry.Much has been written about him and his seminal work. Amongst his contemporaries and friends was the great poet Syed Misri Shah of Naserpur. A lot of individuals became his disciples and later on masters themselves, a lot many learnt from him, such as: Mohammed Faqir Khatiyan- a great Sufi poet & master, Fateh Ali Khan Khatiyan, Qazi Hisamudin and Ahmed Faqir Lakho.

Faqir Nawab Wali Mohammed Khan Laghari departed in 1914 AD/ in the month of Ramadan,1332 AH, and his mausoleum is in Tajpur. He said poetry in Persian, Hindi, Sindhi & Siraiki languages, and his biography and works have been published.

Shah Sharif (Shareef) Rizvi

Shah Sharif

Syed Mohammed Sharif alias Shah Sharif was the son of Miyun Shah Inayat Rizvi- he grew up under the kind care and spiritual guidance of his father. He became a poet as good as his mentor, rather is considered as contemporary of his father; Miyun Shah Inayat Rizvi. He was born around 1050 AH (1640-1641 AD) and probably passed away during the life of his father in the year 1115 AH (1703-1704 AD).

Pir Mohammed Ashraf Shah of Kaamaro Sharif

Mohammed Ashraf Shah-a Sufi mystic, poet and a master, was born in the village called Karam Khan Jamali, Tando Baago, in the year 1799 AD /1214 AH.

Since early years of his life, he turned out to be keen in exploring the mysteries of the existence and sought spiritual path. His hymns are quite popular in the region and his poetic works have been published. Ashraf Shah departed in the year 1860 AD/1277 AH in the village of his abode called Kaamaaro Sharif, Tando Allahyar, Sindh and that is where his mausoleum stands. Eight of his poems are presented in the collection Kafiyuun. 

Bilal Shah Rizvi ,Sindh

Syed Bilal Shah was the son of Shah Sharif and grandson of Miyun Shah Inayat Rizvi. He was born in 1075 AH approximately and passed away during the period of Miya’an Noor Muhammad Kalhora. He was greatly inspired by the works of his father & grandfather and said poems on the similar pattern & of the same quality.

Miyun Shah Inat Rizvi - Sufi Master & Poet, Tando Allahyar District Sindh Pakistan

1. Miyun Shah Inaat Rizvi  (1720 AD/ 1133 AH)

A   great Sufi poet of 17^th century AD- was the son of Nasr-uddin Shah Usman Rizvi.

He was born approximately during 1618-1623 AD/1035-1039 AH. He used to live in a village near Tandoallahyar called “Shahpur”. He is considered one of the pioneers of Sindhi folk style of verse called ‘waee’.

He passed away in the year 1720 AD/ 1133 AH and his shrine is in the Shaikh Musa Ahedani  graveyard, near Tandoallahyar, Sindh.

While browsing on various search engines, exploring the available information on Sindh - the Indus Valley and her people, it was realized that not much was present.

This blog is a humble effort towards the purpose of making reference material on Indus Valley beyond the political boundaries, languages of her people, culture and history available on the internet. This blog focuses particularly on the poets of by-gone era.

  

It is dedicated to Zafar Kazmi (1933 – 2007) and Dr. Nabi Buksh Khan Baloch who inspired us all by their vision, great works and services.

It is to pay a tribute to all the sons and daughters of the Indus Valley, those from the past, present and in the times to come for their contributions towards the human society and their mother earth.
